Introduction
to Betta Splenden aka Siamese Fighting Fish
The Betta belongs to the family of labyrinth
fishes or anabantids, which have an organ, called the labyrinth that enables them to
breathe air. This special organ allows them to live in water with a low oxygen content,
thats the reason why you can keep a betta in a small glass jar without using an air
stone/pump.
The male betta makes a "bubble" nests
when he is ready to spawn. He is very territorial and very protective of his nest As the
female prepares to lay her eggs, the male wraps himself around her while she releases her
eggs, the male catches the eggs in his mouth and spits the eggs onto the nest. After
spawning the female will leave the nest. The male will protect the nest and fry till they
are able to swim and his duty would be complete. Will explain more in details in my
Breeding section.
